The development of the Vartius border crossing point and its surrounding area / Water treatment facility
Funded by Euregio Karelia Neighbourhood Programme 2001-2006
Objective of the project
This project was closely related to the Vartius water management project where water supply and sewage investments were completed. A new development plan was created for Vartius, where arranging appropriate water management was included as one of the procedures. The goal of this project was to ensure the sufficient handling of waste water from Vartius by constructing a new water treatment facility that uses the bio rotor principle in order to prevent the contamination of the waterways and environment as the usage of Vartius increases.
Main activities
• Water management facility planning, design and building
Achievements
The project was implemented using turnkey contracting (a construction implementation method that includes design) and the contractor was selected through competitive bidding. In accordance with the plan, a new wastewater treatment facility that utilises bio motor principles was constructed, which fulfilled the environmental requirements. The water treatment facility was taken into use during the summer of 2005 and the contract's finishing work was completed and the old treatment facility demolished during August. The Vartius region's water management development operations were completed and the area now has a fully functional water supply. Through these actions, prerequisites have been created for the operational development of the region (for example, the border crossing station and permanent residences).
