The development of the Vartius border crossing point and its surrounding area / Water supply
Funded by Euregio Karelia Neighbourhood Programme 2001-2006

Objective of the project

The Vartius development plan created earlier was the basis for this project, as one of its activities included creating an appropriate water supply for the Vartius region. The intention for this project was to construct an appropriate water supply for the Vartius border crossing point and its surrounding environment.

Main activities

• Construction of a new groundwater extraction facility, a groundwater alkalising unit, and the feed and distribution waterworks as well as the sewer network and necessary wastewater pumps.

Achievements

The water extraction facility and the associated limestone filter and pump facility was constructed and connected to the old border guard station's water supply network, which became part of the city's water and sewage works. By constructing a new water extraction facility, a sufficient high-quality household water supply was created for the Vartius region. A water supply and sewer network was also being constructed in the area at the same time. A waste water sewer, pump facility and pressure sewer were constructed and connected to VR's pre-existing waste water pumping facility and drain, which were also included as part of the city's water and sewage works. The project was implemented without problems.
