Sustainable utilization of water resources in the Republic of Karelia (KA535)

Objective of the project

Boost economic development in remote districts of the Republic of Karelia by improving water resource utilization by developing rehabilitation and investment concept for small hydro power plants.

Main activities

• Survey of the small hydro power sector in Republic of Karelia. • Pre-feasibility study and pilot project selection. • Create financing models and design and survey documentation (PIR). • Training workshops for local engineers of municipal utility companies and municipal authorities.

Achievements

General assessment of the small hydro power sector in the Republic of Karelia was carried out. Report based on obtained data with the identification of the existing small hydro power plants suitable for the rehabilitation was drafted. Pre-feasibility study and co-financing models for the rehabilitation of small hydro power plants were introduced. Pilot project was implemented. Local and regional authorities and energy companies through different trainings, information seminars and study trips got knowledge in fuel substitution and efficient utilization of water resources.
