Telecommunication transmission network development Kesälahti – Joensuu – Outokumpu, Säkäniemi – Niirala
Funded by Interreg II Karelia 1996-1999

Objective of the project

Within the framework of the project, it was planned to increase the capacity of the Railtelia telecommunications network using the new SDH technology for data transmission of railways, customs, border guards and businesses in the border zone. The project was closely related to the improvement of telecommunication connections at border crossing points. The telecommunications network under construction will also allow connecting Russian checkpoints through Finland, for example, in relation to customs, freight forwarders and the Oktyabrskaya railway. The project will improve telecommunications links in the Finnish-Russian border area, primarily at the Niirala-Värtsilä border crossing. In addition, the project was aimed at improving the safety of railway transport through the use of the created infrastructure.
