Objective of the project
While mining has become one of the leading industries in the region, it also brings challenges: people fear the effects on nature, and are concerned about the effects of mines on other livelihoods on the region. The project aims to achieve sustainable development by introducing recommendations for social licensing and environmental regulation. During the project, al toolkit “Implementing sustainable mining in the European high north” will be developed
Main activities
The project consisted of three thematic research sub-projects: I: Current practices: participation and relationships between mining projects and local mining communities II: The legal structure: Improving policy instruments and regulations. III: Arctic, international law and rights of the Sami people in mining projects.
