Funded by Interreg II Karelia 1996-1999

Objective of the project

The objective of the project was to identify the presence of soapstone in the Juurikkaniemi area. Ownership and field research permit was in the ownership of the city of Kuhmo. The project was supposed to study the presence of soapstone in the catchment area and determine the quality of products in the most promising areas. The research was planned to be carried out by a geologist, geophysicist and research assistant. The Geological Survey of Finland was going to carry out terrain measurements and deep drilling. The project included two stages of research: at the first stage, the presence of soapstone and its boundary with waste rocks were investigated. At the second stage, the quality and density of the soapstone was specified. The study was being conducted to determine the presence of soapstone in the catchment area at a depth of approximately 35-45 m. The project involved research cooperation with the Institute of Geology of the Karelian Research Centre of the Russian Academy of Sciences. The soapstone deposit in the Juurikkaniemi area belongs to the greenstone belt, most of which is located on the Russian side. Within the framework of this study, significant knowledge and experience will be obtained for the Republic of Karelia and the expansion of cross-border cooperation in this area.
