Funded by Interreg II Karelia 1996-1999

Objective of the project

The environmental technology education program at the North Karelia University of Applied Sciences was focused on training environmental experts whose areas of expertise include the prevention and reduction of diffuse pollution from agriculture and forestry and the development of emission monitoring. The aim of the project was to increase the capacity of the training program to train environmental experts who was going to be familiar with environmental problems in the Republic of Karelia, as well as with the possibilities of their research and monitoring. The information on diffuse pollution generated by the project through case studies could be used in cooperation with neighboring areas as part of the assessment and planning of environmental protection needs. The overall goal of the project was to raise the environmental awareness of the adjacent areas on both sides of the border. The project was going to become a network research collaboration with the Republic of Karelia. The target area of the project was large farms in the Sortavala region and the agricultural college in the vicinity of the city of Sortavala. Farms were the cause of diffuse pollution and the results could be generalized to describe more broadly the sources of diffuse pollution in the Republic of Karelia.
