Safer Roads for Users (KO548)
Funded by Kolarctic ENPI 2007-2013
Objective of the project
The main purpose is to eliminate problems resulting from poorly maintained roads, and the differences between the countries regarding accident risks for road users in the EU and the Barents region. The Finnish experience of providing road traffic safety is one of the best in the world, and the project will help sharing this expertise on the region.
Main activities
The project arranged training, study visits, workshops and consultations to road designers, experts in road maintaining, and other road and traffic professionals. For example, some of the good practices in Finnish road safety solutions were presented on the spot. The weather conditions, the terrain, and wild animals cause similar hazardous spots on the roads on the project region, and solutions were presented and shared. Some solutions improving road safety were transferred to Arkhangelsk and Murmansk regions and tested in practice.
Achievements
The traffic and road experts and administrations received valuable information about traffic hazards and also generally about the functioning of road traffic in the neighboring country. This helps to reduce risks on the roads. Additionally, it helps in spreading information about traffic safety to those who cross the border by their cars.
