Routes of Lönnrot
Funded by Interreg II Karelia 1996-1999

Objective of the project

The objective of the project was to develop cultural tourism in the Kainuu region. Elias Lönnrot collected and edited the Kalevala while living and working as a district doctor in Kajaani. The routes of his medical work and collection of folklore were found out from his diaries and other materials. In Kainuu, Lönnrot's spiritual heritage was not used. The development of cultural tourism can be based on it. Lönnrot's travel routes reached the Republic of Karelia, which gives the project an opportunity to cooperate with local companies and expand tourist routes to Karelia. This project brings together the tourism companies of the Kainuu region so that cultural tourism can meet the needs of discerning tourists. A working group will be set up in each commune in Kainuu to coordinate actions. The activities started in 1998 will continue with a particular focus on the marketing of the Lönnrot routes.
