Renovation of tracks and switches in the Niirala industrial area
Funded by Interreg II Karelia 1996-1999

Objective of the project

The project was going include the renovation of the forwarding railing owned by the Värtsilä municipality, which serviced mainly the cargo transport between Finland and the Russian Federation. The railroad was used primarily by Finnish wood processing companies, such as Enso Ltd. (nowadays Stora Enso), UPM and the Metsä Group, by forwarding companies, the VR Limited Company and many other companies. The first phase of the construction of the industrial railroad had been started by the municipality of Värtsilä in the year 1975, after which the construction has been continued and increased in the beginning of the 1980s as the operations of companies were growing. All of the railroads were made of the recycled K30 railroad material. At the time of the application, these railroads had been spent and the conditions of some of the rails had been dramatically worsened as the axle weights were rising and as mainly Russian carriages were used. All of the K30 railroad material and rail switches were going to be changed to a K43 railroad material during the project and the lightning supplemented.
