Objective of the project
At the first stage of the project, the possibilities of using the Koitajoki River recreation area for tourism on both sides of the border was studied. The project was going to be implemented together with Ilomantsi commune and Suoyarvsky District. The project was based on a survey of travel companies regarding their interests in the use of the Koitajoki River for tourism and the creation of software services. The aim of the second stage of the project was to continue the development of a recreation area along the Koitajoki River in the Republic of Karelia, which had began in 1997. Other project activities: coordination of border crossing practices in the Koitajokii River area, creation of a complete service development plan (taking into account information structures, campfire and berth sites, camping equipment, and the use of the EU´s eastern point in the product development on both sides of the border). In addition, it was planned to form tourism packages and cooperation networks, as well as improve the opportunities for tourism entrepreneurs through additional education. An appropriate marketing plan has been drawn up and all products have been tested.
