Power backup for the Niirala international border crossing point
Funded by Euregio Karelia Neighbourhood Programme 2001-2006
Objective of the project
The Niirala border station did not have backup power. The backup power system was to ensure the availability of electricity at the international border crossing point in exceptional conditions, thus ensuring that the data communication connections and most important terminals would function and border traffic would flow as usual in all conditions. Otherwise, manual inspection methods would have to be used during power outages, which would slow border inspections significantly.
Main activities
• Implementation of Backup power system at the Niirala international border crossing point
Achievements
Backup power at the Niirala international border crossing point was implemented in the project: • by purchasing a backup power source and power storage container with sufficient capacity • by purchasing UPS equipment with sufficient capacity for the purpose • by undertaking the necessary electrical work and structures for the backup power source and in order to implement and utilise the documenting system. As a result of the completed investments, the international border crossing point can now function during power outages under normal readiness conditions and power supply is now secured under exceptional conditions.
