Picker Exchange
Funded by Interreg II Karelia 1996-1999

Objective of the project

The project will develop a seasonal workforce system, mainly for berry farms in the communes of Central Karelia. Together with the project participants (farmers, authorities), rules will be developed on labour mobility for the purpose of employment in real time. In the course of the project, the principles of using foreign labour will be revised and instructions for farms on various work issues will be prepared. The project partners in the Republic of Karelia promised to take care of the preliminary selection of the local labour force, send applications for work permits and participate in the development of the entire system. The project will explore a new kind of cooperation between many parties. The goal of the project is to provide farms with a sufficient number of labour force so that the harvest can be fully and timely, which will allow the berry industry, which requires a large amount of labour, to survive and develop in Central Karelia. The parties to cooperation are the employment services of Sortavala, Pitkyaranta and Lahdenpohja, the Ministry of Labour and Employment of the Republic of Karelia, the Kitee Employment Service, the commune of Central Karelia, Berry District of North Karelia.
