Nuijamaa Border Crossing Development Phase II (LSP SE774)

Objective of the project
The overall objective of the Nuijamaa Phase II project was to strengthen the local and regional sustainable economic development by expanding the existing border crossing facilities to increase border crossing throughput from Russia to Finland.
Main activities
- To carry out the final designs/plans for the needed infrastructure work; - To carry out necessary tendering procedures and; - To carry out the construction of transport area works.
Achievements
The objective was reached by the following activities: 1) to carry out final designs/plans for the needed infrastructure work, 2) to carry put necessary tendering procedures, and 3) to carry out the construction of transport area works. The transport infrastructure works consisted of construction of new area for traffic arriving to Finland, construction of new lanes near the main building, and border crossing management planning and implementation. The new lane checking area and new checking procedures have increased the border crossing capacity. According to the Finnish Border Guard statistics, the new checking procedure is 50% faster, and the yearly capacity is 6,6 million people versus earlier 2,6 million.
