Northern Lights of the East I
Funded by Interreg II Karelia 1996-1999
Objective of the project
The tourism activities of Idän Revontulet Oy (Northern Lights of the East) were concentrated in the Zipringa Wilderness Centre, owned by the Paanajärvi joint company and located close to the Paanajärvi National Park. The main tourist products of the center were hunting and fishing trips. The Wilderness Centre can serve a maximum of 36 tourists at a time. Sales of the Center were managed by Idän Revontulet Oy, which offered the services of the Center for its clients and rented out the premises. Most of the clients were companies. Guests were usually transported to the Wilderness Centre via the Lutta-Vartius border crossing, with the exception of Finnish groups, for whom the snowmobile safari started at the unofficial Suoperä - Kortesalmi border crossing. The objective of the project was to purchase tourism equipment for Idän Revontulet Oy, which mainly included snowmobiles and related equipment. The company could lease the snowmobiles to the Paanajärvi joint venture and they would run between Finland and Russia.
