North Karelia and Russian Karelia gateway-project
Funded by Interreg II Karelia 1996-1999

Objective of the project

The objective of the project was to increase cross-border cooperation in marketing and product development in the tourism industry, as well as to increase the number of shopping trips on both sides of the border. Joensuu was planned to be turned into a centre of Russian tourism, trade and Karelian culture of national importance, as well as into a gateway for travel and trade to third countries. This will be possible due to the unification of the tourism industry, trade and tourism organizations of the Republic of Karelia into one network. More than 60 companies and communities from Joensuu and North Karelia were engaged in the project.
