Mt. 866 The border of Sänkikangas and Jussinpuro
Funded by Interreg II Karelia 1996-1999

Objective of the project

The class I main road No. 866 is a regional road between Finland and Russia, along which there is an intensive flow of wood from Paanajärvi village to Finland. The poor condition of the road creates great difficulties for the transportation of timber, especially in the spring. Prolonged transport interruptions pose a risk of downtime for the Kuusamo timber industry. The road is part of a plan to connect with the northern part of the Republic of Karelia, and also contributes to the development of a tourist flow. The road improvement works at the Cortesalmi border crossing have already been completed and the project will be completed in 1998.
