Main road 70 Niirala border guard station land-use planning
Funded by Euregio Karelia Neighbourhood Programme 2001-2006

Objective of the project

Main road 70 forms Northern Karelia's main connection to the Niirala border station. Due to the increase in border traffic, the demand for various types of traffic services has increased every year. The intention of the project was to prepare for this demand by designing the land-use and traffic service arrangements near the border area.

Main activities

• Creation of local land-use plan of the area.

Achievements

A master plan was created regarding the border area expansion and traffic arrangements, which can be used to determine the future land-use areas necessary for development. Customs, the Finnish Border Guard, Värtsilä Municipality, the Regional Council of North Karelia, Senate Properties and the Finnish Road Administration all actively participated in the planning process. During the planning process, a mutual understanding on a general master plan level was created regarding the land use necessary for the development of the area.
