Improving traffic safety and flow on main road 70 Onkamo–Niirala
Funded by Euregio Karelia Neighbourhood Programme 2001-2006

Objective of the project

Main road 70 forms Northern Karelia's main connection to the Niirala border station. Along with an increase in traffic volume, traffic safety risks are also increasing. In particular, the risk of accidents involving light (non-motorised) traffic has increased. The goal of the project was to improve traffic safety on the road and the flow of heavy trucking traffic using small procedures and, therefore, to promote trade between Russia and Finland as well as other interaction.

Main activities

1. bypass area on main road 70 and local road 15595 intersection 2. safety medians at the main road 70 / road 486 intersection 3. wide medians and light (non-motorised) traffic lanes at Oeschintie 4. bypass area on main road 70 at the Takkunurmentie intersection 5. bypass area on main road 70 and private road transfer at the Harjulantie intersection 6. improvements on main road 70 at the intersection with road 15596 7. bypass area and road lighting on main road 70 at the intersection with main road 4940 8. subway tunnel on main road 70 by Peijonniemi school and light (non-motorised) traffic lanes 9. improvements on main road 70 at Niirala with lanes for light (non-motorised) traffic and private road arrangements

Achievements

The planned procedures were completed as a part of the road project - a subway for light traffic beneath the road by the Peijonniemi school was build, bypass areas to intersections were added, road lighting were increased.
