Improving the safety of the Niirala border traffic
Funded by Euregio Karelia Neighbourhood Programme 2001-2006
Objective of the project
Main road 70 is the main gateway leading to the Niirala border station. The amount of traffic travelling through Niirala is steadily increasing and as a result of this growth in traffic volume, risks related to traffic safety have also increased. The project was intended to improve traffic safety by increasing lighting in risk areas on main road 70 and main road 486 Onkamo–Niirala and Puhos–Tohmajärvi and by constructing bypass areas (for example, the possibility to pass on the right at intersections) and safety medians on main road 486. 50 percent of the project funding was received from the European Regional Development fund and 50 percent from the Finnish Road Administration.
Main activities
The implemented road improvement sites were: • bypass area at the main road 486 and road 15521 intersection • bypass area at the intersection of main road 486 and road 15525 • bypass area at the intersection of main road 486 and Saramäki road • bypass area at the intersection of main road 486 and main road 4880 • bypass area at the intersection of main road 486 and road 15548 • main road 486 Kunoniemi light (non-motorised) traffic lane • improving the main road 486 and main road 4940 Tenka intersection • road lighting on main road 486 between the main road 4880 and the roundabout • road lighting on main road 486 Kytänniemi–road 15545 • road lighting on main road 486 in the industrial area, Tohmajärvi • road lighting on main road 70 Purtovaara–Kemie • road lighting on main road 486 Asema school–Tenka intersection
