Imatra Border Crossing Development (LSP SE768)

Objective of the project

The local/regional economies will be developed and reinforced in a sustainable way when the accessibility for the people, goods and services will be improved. This will facilitate also new business opportunities in the region.

Main activities

Design, construction and reconstruction of the Imatra road border crossing. Main actives of the project are: - to carry out the final designs/plans for the needed buildings and infrastructure work, - to make final specifications (terms of reference) for the needed technical equipment, - to carry out necessary tendering procedures and - to carry out the construction works and purchase/installation of the controlling/monitoring equipment. The project will be divided into three independent sub-projects: 1) the construction of the transport areas, 2) the extension of the existing border station and construction of new custom/border control buildings and 3) the purchase/installation of the equipment. The project will enhance cross-border transport between Russia and Finland/EU by improving border transport infrastructure as well as customs and border facilities at the Imatra border crossing point.

Achievements

As the result the final engineering plan and detailed construction plans for additional lines, traffic arrangements and parking area extension were made. The construction phase of new lanes and the parking area extension were completed in October 2014. For the construction and installation of electrical traffic control equipment the Centre for Economic Development, Transport and the Environment for Southeast Finland implemented cable works. Telematics works were ready in July 2014. The construction and installation of electrical traffic control equipment were completed in December 2014. The Senate Properties produced the engineering plans for the construction of the shelter project for passenger traffic checks and the construction project for the extension and basic improvement of the station building. The Senate Properties also implemented the shelter for passenger traffic checks in 2013. The extension and basic improvement of the station building was completed in December 2014. The Finnish Border Guard and the Finnish Customs produced plans for the construction of the border crossing station and improved and developed the border check facilities in the main building of the border crossing point. The implemented actions contain new traffic management arrangements meaning lane check area including lane border check facilities (booths) and facilities for further border check measures (second line checks) as well as all border control technology for border checks at these new facilities. The installation of the border check lane booths was completed and the lane booths were taken into use in February 2014. The installation of two shaft weighing appliance for motor vehicles was completed in the year 2014.
