Forest as an eco-filter
Funded by Interreg II Karelia 1996-1999

Objective of the project

The objective of the project was to develop its own version of the ecofiltration method already used in Sweden, which was going to be suitable for the climate of North Karelia and the Republic of Karelia. The development was going to use willow varieties prevailing in the region. The ecofiltration method was going to help reduce nutrient emissions into water bodies. The project was going to be implemented in the Siikasalmi and Kesalahti districts of the Liperi municipality. In addition, the project was going to develop and implement an ecofiltration system at a large livestock farm in North Karelia to limit nutrient emissions from the farm. The results and information of the project was going to be transferred through Russian partners to the Republic of Karelia and then to Russia (from Petrozavodsk to Sortavala and to St. Petersburg).
