Development of the Ilomantsi–Haapovaara border crossing point and expansion of the crossing arrangement
Funded by Euregio Karelia Neighbourhood Programme 2001-2006
Objective of the project
The goal of the project was to expand the border crossing facilitation at the temporary Ilomantsi–Haapovaara border crossing location so that citizens of Finland and Russia as well as vehicles could cross the border at Haapovaara.
Main activities
The project had received funding earlier from the Interreg II A Karelia programme, but due to the scope and small amount of the funding, the project was not completed. Now the previously unfinished work from the previous phases, which was necessary in order to later open the border crossing location, would be completed. The project would include the completion of the road leading to the Haapovaara border crossing as well as the construction of the border functions.
Achievements
The work outlined in the plan was completed in the project. The road construction was completed, the border crossing structures (crossing lift barriers and cabling) were installed and the necessary arrangements related to road construction such as lighting and changes in electricity supply were completed.
