Development of Nivala-Haapajärvi sub-regions
Funded by Interreg II Karelia 1996-1999

Objective of the project

The objective of the project was to realize the developments created over four years by the sister municipalities into practical economic actions. The priority area is the use of rock deposits, which became possible thanks to the infrastructure of the Pyhäjärvi mine. Other areas of development include tourism development. This became possible because the Belomorsky sister region has good sea communication, for example, with the Solovetsky Islands. In addition, the Nivala-Haapajärvi sub-region has invested in the collection and processing of wild berries, and together with the Belomorsk region there is a good chance of creating a profitable economic activity in this sector.
