Development of international traffic in the Savo-Karelia region

Objective of the project
The objective of the research was to clarify the portion, placing and the features of the traffic crossing the Finnish eastern border at the roads and highway transportations of Savo-Karjala. The mapping of the international traffic flows was going to be primarily important for the development of the road infrastructure and the new investments of the Savo-Karjala area. Sufficient information was going to be needed about the transportation chains, the quality and the features of the transported products and the cargo and about the qualities and requirements of the driver. In addition, the information about the travel chains of civilian traffic, the travel types, the features of the travels and the travellers were important information for the specifying of the focus points in the road maintenance. The purpose of the investigations was to find and prioritise actions, which could be used to improve the flexibility and the functionality of the traffic system and the traffic routes and services required by the tourism. The results of the investigation were going to help to develop the transport system into a more competitive compared to the one that was on use at the time of the application and to anticipate the possible developments needs in the future. In addition, the results were going to improve the cross border cooperation and to support additional social design.
