Development Kaatiolampi war area as a tourist destination
Funded by Interreg II Karelia 1996-1999
Objective of the project
The objective of the project was to restore a unique military-historical area and use it as a tourist destination. The area near Kaatiolampi is associated with the last major battle of the Continuation War. The battlefields that remained on the territory of Ilomantsi commune are the only battlefields of the war inside the Finnish borders, therefore they are nationally significant military-historical objects. The best-preserved war zone is the area near Kaatiolampi. The Ilomantsi municipality have begun investing in the restoration and transformation of the area into a tourist destination, while protecting it in accordance with the requirements of the relic law. In addition, together with Russian partners, it was planned to collect information on operations in the area of Kaatiolampi.
