Cooperation between the Koillismaa sub-region and Louhi region
Funded by Interreg II Karelia 1996-1999

Objective of the project

The project has been implemented in thematic sub-projects based on issues related to cooperation between the Koillismaa sub-region and Louhi region. Subprojects include the following topics: deepening cooperation between the authorities, promoting the Kortesalmi-Suoperä border crossing project, cooperation in the forestry sector, cooperation in crafts and culture, cooperation in accommodation and catering and promotion of Russian business culture in the Koillismaa subregion. Together, the subprojects form a coherent whole, the objective of which is to develop broader collaboration. This includes identifying cooperation partners, exploring cooperation models, defining cooperation agreements, organizing industry meetings, and informing stakeholders. At the same time, the subprojects promote practical cooperation that takes place through the Kortesalmi-Suoperä border entry point. The objective of the project was to create additional opportunities for cooperation between the Koillismaa sub-region and Louhsky region, promote sectoral projects and increase the usefulness of international border crossing points, and promote the region as a gateway between east and west. The main idea of the project begins with the idea of the White Road, which united several cultures, allowed trade between the two seas and laid the foundation for the development of the territory between the Koillismaa sub-region and Louhsky region. The idea of a White road can also be applied to the goal setting of this project.
