Barents – Karelia map database project
Funded by Interreg II Karelia 1996-1999
Objective of the project
The “Geographic information technology of Barents Region”-project was a joint cooperation project of the Finnish, Swedish, Norwegian and Russian atlas authorities and of the regional authorities of the North-West Russia. It was divided to multiple phases, the first of which was ongoing at the time of the application and included the producing of the joint 1:1 million map-database of the Barents cooperation region and the exporting of the knowledge about the geographic information technology to the terrain resource committees in Murmansk, Arkhangelsk and Petrozavodsk. The incorporation of the Finnish Oulu Province and the Swedish Västerbotten Province to the Barents cooperation region meant that these provinces needed also to be included in the geographic information technology of the Barents region. This was something, which the authorities were not prepared for at the time. This project was going to include the required work in order to incorporate the Oulu Province and North-Karelia to the Barents´ geographic information technology.
