Funded by South-East Finland - Russia ENPI 2007-2013

Objective of the project

The overall objective of the Arctic Development project was to establish the fundamentals to design and create safe and ecological structures and devices for energy production in the demanding Arctic area.

Main activities

- To develop the conceptual model of the economic and industrial development in the Arctic region in the field of metal technologies (Finland & Russia). - To define priorities in the development of new materials and advanced technologies and to create database of currently used materials and technologies by companies in the Arctic area.

Achievements

There was major focus on scientific work in support of this objective, in order to increase awareness of new steel-welded structures used in the Arctic area for the application of, for example, shipbuilding, offshore platforms, gas and oil pipelines and windmills. For example, one Doctoral dissertation, nine Master’s and 12 Bachelor’s theses were completed on topics related to Arctic conditions during the project period. In addition, there were 22 scientific publications issued. Several companies acting in the welding and shipbuilding fields were invited for future cooperation with positive response.
